鸳鸯石是凝灰质砾岩受重力作用沿着节理裂隙面崩裂而成，节理裂隙面平直光滑，岩石中胶结的砾岩也沿着岩石节理裂隙面被平直切割。这两块砾石似被天神一剑劈开的两半，在寻找着另一半的自己，寻找着爱情，故而得名为“鸳鸯石”。
